Hudson and Baldwin Prints

Charles Bradford Hudson (1865-1939) was a painter, muralist, and etcher. Born in Ollsprings, Ontario, Canada in 1865, Hudson was a descendant of William Bradford, colonial governor of Massachusetts and Chief Justice John Jay. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University and served during the Spanish-American War under Theodore Roosevelt. Upon moving to Pacific Grove, California in 1903, he established a studio near Asilomar. A specialist in fish, he did many studies for scientific publications. He authored two books (The Crimson Conquest and The Royal Outlaw) as well as many magazine articles. Hudson died at his home in Pacific Grove on June 27, 1939. His oils include landscapes, marines, and desert scenes. His fine ichthyological illustrations were used by the United States Fish Commission in several publications including "Investigations of the Aquatic Resources and Fisheries of Porto Rico" (1902) and "The Aquatic Resources of Hawaiian Islands" (1906). Many of the fine chromolithographs from these works are featured here in our collection. Albertus H. Baldwin (1865-1935) was a hugely popular and successful marine life artist. In the late 1800's Baldwin was commissioned by the United States Fish Commission to record many of the most well known American food and game fishes. He accomplished this in oil paintings at the end of the nineteenth century. Along with Hudson and Denton, Baldwin's work has been reproduced in numerous reference books, demonstrating his exacting detail and accuracy in capturing the fishes textures and colors. These prints are rare and beautiful examples of early American nature illustration. These prints measure approximately 7" by 10".
