Denton Prints

Sherman Foote Denton (1856-1937). A naturalist, artist, adventurer, entrepreneur, collector, inventor, and author. His diversity of interest was the by-product of a passion and tenacious curiosity about the natural world. As a young man, along with his brothers, he collected butterflies, birds, insects, fossils, freshwater pearls, and gems and sold them throughout the world to museums and private buyers. Later he developed and patented a method for mounting fish that preserved their vivid colors. So perfect were his fish models that orders poured in from museums around the country including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, the Field Museum in Chicago, and the Agassiz Museum at Harvard University. As part of his fish mounting process Denton made watercolor paintings of all the fish he had collected in America, Europe, Hawaii, and the West Indies as well as those sent to him packed in ice from all over the world. The State of New York Fisheries, Game, and Forest Commission hired Denton to paint various species of North American fish. He created 99 different fish images that were reproduced in the Commissions "Annual Reports" between 1895 and 1909. These reproductions were made by the painstaking process of chromolithography, in which each color is printed from a different stone plate and aligned perfectly to give the finished work its lifelike appearance. These pieces have long been prized by both scientists and collectors for their accuracy in capturing the detail of living specimens. It is these beautiful, 100 year old prints that you see before you. These prints measure approximately 8" by 11".
